"Switch" Immersion Dripper, Size 02

The Hario Switch has become one of my favorite ways to make coffee. It combines what I like about pour-over and immersion brewing, but makes the process much easier and more consistent. The biggest advantage for me is how forgiving it is. You can let the coffee steep and then simply flip the switch to release it through the filter. The result is a rich, flavorful cup while still having the clean finish you expect from a pour-over. I also like the flexibility. You can use it as a straightforward immersion brewer or experiment with different pour-over and hybrid techniques when you want more control. It’s well made, simple to clean, and doesn’t require a complicated routine to get excellent results. A clever, simple design from Hario and an easy five stars.

I own and have tried every manual method of brewing coffee (Aeropress, French Press, various pour-overs, cold brew, etc) and happily settled on this one. I could use a hybrid method as seen on YouTube, combining pour over with immersion, but immersion alone produced a perfect cup so why not take the easier route? Four minutes to a perfect brew. To help it along, I manually grind the beans, weigh them, rinse the filter with boiling water, and do a 30 sec. bloom (ok, so the whole process takes a bit longer than 4 min). Previously I used a pour over coffee maker with water tank, but the water flowed too quickly through the tank and the circular spacing of the holes didn't seem to distribute the water evenly over the cone. Also I didn't like that it was made of plastic. I used a French Press for a while but cleaning it out was gross and even though I put the grounds in the compost bin, enough went down my drain that the sink clogged all the way back to the pipe behind the wall. I never had to call a plumber for the kitchen sink in 9 years, until I started using the French Press. Aeropress: made of black plastic, so enough said. With the Switch, cleanup is so easy and I don't have to spend time doing an intricate pour over, weighing the pros & cons of the concentric circle pattern vs. the flower pattern. Omg I sound like such a coffee snob/geek, but if you've read this far, you're probably right there with me. Here's a tip, though. The first time I used it, the switch piece didn't close properly and the water flowed right through. Turns out the little plastic switch was extended too far out (does it always arrive that way?). I pushed it closer towards the cone, and it sort of clicked into place, and then it worked perfectly (thanks to Reddit and YouTube). And now I have my coffee routine dialed in perfectly!

Very easy to use, seems strong and is the perfect size for my wife and I to each have a cup of coffee in the morning if we want. The carafe and the dripper both seem like they can take a hit but I don’t want to learn if I’m wrong yet

Just arrived, made 2 delicious, full, yet mellow cups of coffee. Well built, great concept, immediately making its way into my gear rotation. I ordered Size 02 and find it a bit small to work within, since it’s actually more narrow than my Size 02 V60. Especially for larger immersion volumes/ratios, I would suggest sizing up for those who prefer to guzzle it down like me. *I’ve only tested with the recipe from TALES COFFEE, but don’t think I’ve anywhere near mastered it yet. Even with improper technique, I still got super satisfactory cups with each brew.

I purchased this on a whim after several months of success with a simple V60 and having been intrigued by the "steep and release" Clever dripper. Although redundant with my regular V60 for pour overs, I had a million compatible filter papers around, so I bought this instead of a Clever. Brew methods are endless for this, so I'll just share what I found to work best! I use a roughly 1:15 grounds to water ratio (usually 600mL water and 40 grams of coffee for my Hario 2 cup insulated server). My grind size is 1 click courser than what I would do for a regular V60 pourover. 1) Boil water. I have no issue using it fresh off the boil since it cools slightly during the bloom phase. 2) Rinse and preheat the filter paper (in the cone) and mug/server with the water. 2) Starting with the switch in the open position, like a regular V60, add 2-3x the weight of your grounds, evenly over the grounds, until they are evenly saturated. 3) Give the dripper a slight swirl and wait 30-45 seconds for bloom phase. 4) Set the switch to closed, and fill the dripper until the water is a little above the grounds. Give a swirl to settle the grounds. 5) Wait 20-30 seconds. 6) Flip the switch and let the coffee draw down. 7) Repeat steps 4-6 as many times as it takes until you reach your final weight of water. This steep and release method, with the right grind size, yields a very sweet, balanced cup of coffee! My only gripes with this dripper, vs the regular plastic V60, are as follows: 1) With the rubber/glass combination and switch mechanism, there are more crevices that can accumulate grime. I usually get away with rinsing with remaining boiled water, but something to look out for. 2) The glass conducts heat, so it's a lot harder to handle a scalding dripper to dump grounds. 3) You HAVE to be careful when dumping the filter paper/grounds or cleaning. The switch mechanism and metal stopper ball are not secured in any way, and will fall out into the trash or garbage disposal. This was a day one mistake for me. Keep this dripper vertical at all costs when handling. 4) The rubber base is too big for some coffee mugs. I always use this with my Hario insulated server. Because of the extra hassle and cleanup, I usually alternate between using the Hario Switch and my regular V60. I also only use it when I know I want 2 cups of coffee, and use with my Hario Insulated Server since I know it fits and the rim of it isn't touching my mouth, since the Switch is harder to clean. Anyways, this is a great device for making up to 2 cups of coffee! Even if you already have a 2 cup V60, I would still buy this for variety and experimentation since you can share filter papers. I only wish there was a plastic version of this instead of glass, and that a more secure switching mechanism was designed to help with cleaning.

Świetnie działa, banalnie prosto się myje i zajmuje odrobinę miejsca w szufladzie. Kawa pozbawiona fusów smakuje znakomicie i mam pełną kontrolę nad czasem parzenia. Oryginalne filtry Hario V2 są zdecydowanie najlepsze i stosunkowo tanie. Próbowałem zamienników, ale niektóre wprowadzają posmak mokrej tektury, więc będę kupował tylko Hario. W komplecie z młynkiem Timemore C5 PRO tworzą idealną parę, ale w zupełności wystarczy najprostszy młynek. I nie słuchajcie youtuberów, że potrzebujecie do kompletu magiczny czajnik z gęsią szyją, wagę za ciężkie pieniądze i stoper z zegarem atomowym. Ja po prostu wkładam filtr, mielę kawę raz drobniej, raz grubiej, wsypuję do filtra i zalewam wodą z najzwyklejszego czajnika Philips. Zero problemu, działa równie precyzyjnie. Wcześniej miałem ekspres kapsułkowy Nescafe, ale męczyło mnie kupowanie drogich kapsułek i regularne czyszczenie zakamarków urządzenia. Kolejny, wielki ekspres De'Longhi, który posiadam, zajmuje ogrom miejsca i wymaga jeszcze bardziej skomplikowanego czyszczenia. Stoi w kartonie, bo Hario Switch jest proste w użyciu i robi pyszną kawę. Brałem też pod uwagę AeroPress, ale jednak wybrałem solidne szkło Hario zamiast plastiku. Mam już kilka miesięcy, codziennie robię 1-2 kawy i szkło wygląda jak nowe. Zero osadu, zero rys. Nawet parę uderzeń podczas mycia przetrwało i nic się złego nie dzieje. Do gumowej podstawy też nie można się przyczepić. Wygląda solidnie i nie ma kontaktu z kawą podczas parzenia.
