They're in the book. And on this disc. From the director of Watchmen and 300 come two tales from the celebrated graphic novel that do not appear in the extraordinary Watchmen theatrical release. Tales of the Black Freighter (featuring the voice of 300's Gerard Butler) brings to strikingly animated life the novels richly layered story-within-a-story, a daring pirate saga whose turbulent events may mirror those in the Watchmen's world. Stars from the Watchmen movie team in the amazing live-action/CGI Under the Hood, based on Nite Owl's powerful first-hand account of how the hooded adventurers came into existence. Two fan-essential stories. One place to watch the excitement. Watching the Watchmen begins here. Review: Watchment - Great Review: A Whole New Experiance - Before I ever sat down in a movie theater to the "Watchmen" motion picture I read through the Watchmen Graphic Novel. When I did so I was introduced to the concept of a superhero that does not always do the right things and does not always save the world without so much as a single casualty. I was introduced to men and women who are flawed in many ways, but who had the skills and the charisma to do what they considered the right thing to do for the benefit of the world's people's. Within the pages of Watchmen was a side story that mirrored the main story and it was called "Tales of the Black Freighter." Though I read through the story of a shipwrecked sea captain whose determination to save his loved ones drove him to the brink, I felt that the dvd brought new life to the story. In the graphic novel you are focused on the Watchmen story while this other one slides in and out of focus. With the story being told in one cohesive storyline along with Gerard Butlers emotional narration made me really feel and care for this story and its bitter ending. I would also suggest this dvd for people who are also just simply looking for good emotional story telling. The "Under The Hood" documentry ,if that is what you could call it,is also an interesting piece to watch for fans of the movie or graphic novel and it also makes this alternate timeline that the novel and movie are based around feel real by adding in commercial breaks with referances for people who know their "Watchmen."

WATCHMEN FAN MUST HAVE!!!!
As a newly introduced fan to the Watchmen Comic novel, I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed the Captain's tale against the Black Freighter but I appreciated the story even more so in the "Watchmen Motion Comic" because one could see the parallels in both stories. That of the captain and the watchmen. "Under the Hood" was also pretty good. For those of you who have only seen the movie, you will enjoy it because it tells the story of the original super heroes "The Minute Men." So again, watchmen fan, must have. Not that big of a fan, not so much!!!!! You decide....

From novel to comic to screen
Being a fan of Alan Moore and Watchmen, buying the movie blue-ray, "Tales of the Black Freighter" cannot miss in my videoteque. As transposition from a comic inside the novel to animated movie, loses much pathos and meaning, thru, who wich had red the novel, has clear in mind what's the story reflects. The narrating voice of Gerard Butler is pretty amazing but I don't think it gives the right athmosphere to the context. After all is a movie to be watched having in mind the graphic novel so I propose : read the book before watch this. Regarding "Under the Hood" I found it really enjoyable, very nice reconstruction of the ambietation and characters, the whole blue-ray deserve to be buyed just for this.

Fast service, disc played without a hitch. Yay!!
Didn't know about the reputation of the comics. Never saw any of the comics. But the movie was a trick. Kind of dark but kept you in suspense right up to the final 15 minutes. Watched it several times. A hoot!

DC comics should pay you for watching this
What a load of crud. there are 2 features, the first is a 25 minute anime (including 4 minute credits) which is pretty much a monologue, you might be better off buying the comic book, you would probably get more enjoyment out of it. The second is a totally boring sequence of 'live' interviews of the characters in the movie. And now for the disc itself, it's one of those discs that just start the feature, there is no menu, no subtitles, no audio choices. Oh wait, there is a menu of 'extras' I only watched one of them and that was hardly worth it. This should have been bonus disc not a separate one. Seems just another ego trip by Zack Snyder. Please don't make the mistake that I and others have, don't buy or rent this.

One of the better Watchman stories
Although I am not a big Watchman fan, this story was great. It made me want to see the main movie on DVD. To be honest, I only bought it because Gerard Butler was the voice of one of the main characters, and I am a big Gerard Butler fan, but this was exciting and graphic and I loved the artwork. It got here really fast too. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Achtung! Nur für Freaks!

This particular 'episode' as it seems to be in its own way referred of The Watchmen film and its different edits, has in fact, little or nothing to do with the actual film and it's storyline. Despite all the fuss about it being in connected tandem with the original film Watchmen, which is the real title that you want to see in first instance. Despite this, the only mentioning of anything to do with 'Tales of the black freighter' is when during the film The Watchmen, a young man sits on the side of a run down street surrounded by thugs, himself reading a comic by the name of 'Tales of the black freighter.' Within the confines of the young man's comic book we can see scenes from the actual animated film, all of this which the thugs that the young man is surrounded by, mockingly scorn before aspiring towards seeking out the author of the comic and violently murdering him in his own home. That having said being the only relevance this particular animation has towards the film 'The Watchmen,' come to think and nothing else. But however though, the reason I give it full marks is because it is very good to watch first of all; if (obviously) you are very much into anything in the line of the The Watchmen memorabilia (which I for one very much happened to be), secondly; if you also love very violent animation, which this title I have to warn is in its own way (sounds cool enough to me anyways). Not to mention third; if you happened to love anything in the line of cut-throat pirates (all the more cool) and fourth, last but not least; really well done filming unlike many other titles out there (a pretty good violent anime this one, despite it being so short in length for a movie or episode even of anything). So, in lieu of all of what I have mentioned, for these four reasons, full marks from me. Enough said.
